On June 19, 2010 in Costa Mesa, California, 'Ôlohe Solomon Kaihewalu held a seminar on his family art of Hawaiian Lua. To show respect for all martial arts systems he announced at the seminar that it was his wish for all the Kumu Lua (Lua Instructors) who were given written permission on June 5, 2009 by 'Ôlohe to teach his family art who are teaching other martial art systems, to add the name of Lua at the end of the system name they are teaching.

Aiki-Lua

Ai = alignment or joining of
Ki = the spirit
Lua = Hawaiian Martial Art

Aiki-Lua is a blend of martial arts techniques taken from Aikido and the Kaihewalu Hawaiian 'Ohana Lua. Its true meaning is the spiritual (Ki) alignment or blending of Aiki principles with that of the Mana (spirit) of Hawaiian Lua using Te Waza (hand techniques) of Aikido and Poho Lima (empty hand techniques) which represent many of the animals making up the Kaihewalu Lua. Below are some examples of the techniques of Aiki-Lua.

AikidoLua

Kote Gaeshi (reverse hand) = Mano (teeth of the shark)

Irimi Nage (entering throw) = 'Io (wing of the hawk)

Osoto Gari (leg sweep) = Pua'a (kick of the pig)

Atemi Waza (striking techniques) = Mahimahi (tail of the dolphin)

As one of the Kumu Lua given permission to teach the Kaihewalu 'Ohana Lua, Sensei Dye is able to teach the Kaihewalu Lua at Shuyokan. Henceforth, when teaching the Lua in conjunction with Shuyokan Ryu Aikido or Aikijutsu it shall be now be referred to as Aiki-Lua.
